MetaSwitch's Media Gateway products deliver media switching and processing capabilities
for voice over IP and time-division-multiplexed (TDM) applications within IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) networks.
MetaSwitch offers two Media Gateway models offering low-to-medium and medium-to-high
scalability.
- The entry-level MG2510 delivers up to 2,304 concurrent calls in a 7U chassis.
- The flagship MG3510 delivers up to 28,224 concurrent calls in a 12U chassis.
Functions supported by all MetaSwitch Media Gateway models include transcoding, compression,
announcements, echo cancellation, silence suppression, comfort noise generation, conference calling, and
tone detection/generation over TDM (T1/T3) and packet (Gigabit Ethernet) interfaces. Quality of Service (QoS)
mechanisms are also built in for toll-quality voice services.
INDUSTRY LEADING RELIABILITY AND SCALABILITY
The MG2510 and MG3510 share a common hardware architecture, with fully redundant,
hot-swappable CPUs, fans, disks and alarm cards. Both systems also integrate a packet-switched multi-gigabit
backplane with dual redundant controllers. This handles maximum traffic loads with plenty of bandwidth to spare,
and supports Ethernet uplink aggregation for simple deployment of highly scalable VoIP networks.
MetaSwitch led the industry with the introduction of the
first "media gateway on a card" to incorporate TDM, ATM and IP
interfaces along with the latest generation of field-programmable on-board
DSPs. As a result, transcoding and echo cancellation can be supported on
every call up to the maximum system capacity - without compromising
scalability. In contrast, platforms that require slots dedicated to DSP
cards, or which simply do not have sufficient DSP capacity, are unable to
effectively reach their advertised maximum capacity, particularly for VoIP
applications.
System capacity can be increased on an "as needed basis" with the
following media gateway cards.
- PB3100 (16xT1)
- PB4000 (1xDS3, OC-3, GigE)
- PB4500/5000 (3xDS3, GigE)
With these options, a single chassis can scale from 384 to 28,224 concurrent calls - or
112,896 in a single 7' rack.
OPEN INTEROPERABILITY
As fully IMS-compliant network elements, MetaSwitch Media Gateways support H.248,
the IMS-defined protocol for trunk gateway control. This enables them to operate under the control
of any call agent implementing the IMS media gateway control function (MGCF),
including the MetaSwitch CA9000 Series Call Agent.
In addition, MetaSwitch Media Gateways support termination of ISDN-PRI circuits,
with IUA (PRI over IP) over SCTP backhaul to the Call Agent.
EMERGENCY STANDALONE
In the event that the connection between the MetaSwitch Media Gateway and Call Agent is
lost, Emergency Standalone capability allows the Media Gateway to operate as a
standalone switch until the connection with Call Agent is restored.
INTEGRATED SIGNALING GATEWAY
The MG2500 Series and MG3500 Series Media Gateways also accommodate two
or more SG1200 Signaling Gateway cards, allowing you to optionally
deploy both Media and Signaling Gateway elements in one chassis.
This reduces deployment complexity and cost where signaling and trunk interfaces are
located in the same physical facility, for example in a collocation center.
In a distributed deployment with more than one media gateway, signaling
links may be terminated on any combination of the gateways that best fits the SS7 requirements for the network
as a whole. In addition, an A-link pair can be split across two gateways (that is, one link
terminated in each chassis) for increased physical redundancy, if desired.
MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONS
All MetaSwitch Media Gateways are fully supported by the MetaView NMS™,
allowing configuration via an easy-to-use graphical user interface.
